Dear St. Joseph’s School Community,
Advice on Semester Reporting
I am writing today to share what will happen with reporting in this Covid-19 period. As we all know our school moved to remote learning as a result of Covid-19 and with this change our usual ways of working and engaging with students have looked very different in this period.
The Covid-19 curriculum change will also have an impact on how we assess and report on this valuable student learning. Our school, teachers, students and families have all had to adapt, change and respond to the landscape – sometimes on a daily and weekly basis. As we are all well aware there have been countless positive opportunities and new learning, but there have also been challenges and we have each responded as best we could to what was a very different second term school program.
I again thank every student for all they have achieved and all they have contributed – they should all be very proud of their efforts, resilience, persistence, managing challenging moments and ultimately the work they completed over the Covid-19 learning time. I also again thank each parent/carer and family member for your encouragement, feedback, patience and willingness to engage with us to support your child’s ongoing wellbeing and learning.
With all of this in mind, I would ask you to appreciate that the content on which we report is reduced, as the usual assessments and teacher observations undertaken in the everyday classroom have not been fully possible this term.
Teachers will use a broad evidence-base to make their own balanced assessments of your child’s progress at this point in time. Such evidence includes teacher/student communication, student-led conversations and teacher observations, term one notes, work samples and staff comprehensive record-keeping during the remote off-site program.
Curriculum Advice
In that context, the report will look different from usual. Following the advice of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), Victorian Department of Education and Training, and the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV), this report will provide:
- An assessment of student learning from Term 1 in English, Mathematics and Religious Education.
- A description of the anticipated knowledge and skills covered in the remote and flexible learning period of Term 2
- A statement advising parents of the other areas of the curriculum taught in Semester One.
- A remote and flexible learning comment stating how the student has adjusted to the remote and flexible learning environment.
- A general comment on how each student has settled into the 2020 school year, their participation in developing their learning skills during the Learning Behaviours (Respectful Relationships) Unit of work in term one.
Parent-Teacher Communication
- An opportunity for parents of students who were full time onsite during Remote Learning to communicate with the classroom teacher will be made available to discuss the report.
- Parents who attend PSG’s will already have communicated with their child's teacher and so will not require a separate conversation to discuss the report.
- There has been a significant amount of communication between teachers and parents of students learning from home. Many parents may feel this has fulfilled their needs and may choose not to request any further communication this term regarding the student’s report.
- If a parent/ teacher is of the opinion that a conversation about the report is necessary, either can make a request.
The end of year report (December) will provide a more normal and comprehensive view of the years learning across all usual curriculum areas.
In summary
Reports will be made available via our Parent Access Module (PAM) that can be accessed from the link on the SZApp or the link on our website (Android users should use this link).
Reports will be available from Monday 22nd June, 2020 from 4pm.
With constant home school phone/google communication the normal parent-teacher visit on site will not be required or be able to occur this term. However, if important information by a parent or teacher is still required either can express the need for a call. This will be organised with your child’s classroom teacher in the last week of the term.
Again I thank everyone for your help with these arrangements during our transition to full schooling. Again any issue can be clarified as needed by contacting our office on 5516 1343.
Regards,
Michael Gray. Principal.

SSV Update
Interschool sport – current status
School Sport Victoria advises that no interschool sporting events and competitions will run in Term 2.
Some interschool sporting events and competitions have been cancelled and will not run in 2020. These include:
- Local district or division events which cannot be rescheduled to later in the year. This may be due to the seasonality of the sport, access to venues or availability of schools to participate ...
- Senior team sports (Year 11/12), including Premier League competitions, as many of these were due to be run over Term 2 and 3 and will not be rescheduled.
- Region and State Championships for cross country and winter team sports due to be held in Term 3, meaning that progression to a Region or State Championship will not occur for the following sports: Australian Football, badminton (secondary only), bowls (secondary only), cross country, hockey, netball, soccer and tee ball (primary only).
- State Championship competition for swimming is cancelled. The remaining Division and Region Championships may be delivered in Term 4, where possible.

Hello everyone and a big welcome back from the Library staff.
Thanks to all students and parents for your support and patience with borrowing and returning books over a very unusual and difficult time.
Over this term some changes have happened within the Library. With sadness but grateful hearts we say farewell to Kath King as she has retired from teaching. We were incredibly lucky to have her working in the Library over the last 12 years.
The Foundation and Junior Library lessons will continue with the following adjustments.
We welcome to our Library team Emily Lloyd, who will teach Wednesday’s lessons, Elise Smock, who will teach Tuesday’s lessons and Jo Barfus-McCoy who will teach on Mondays. It’s great to have them onboard.
We will be sending out overdue notices later next week, just as a reminder to check at home for any books. We have been going through the Fiction and Picture Story Books to check for any lost or misplaced books on our shelves and if everyone could check at home that would be so helpful. If anyone believes they have sent books back that are still on the list please send it back to the Library with the book titles marked.
New books have arrived in the library while we have been at home and they are going out faster than a speeding ... book!
Thanks to Emily for the new display.
Keep warm and keep reading!

Week 3 - Called by the Spirit
This week the Confirmation Candidates are working on Session 3 - Called by the Spirit. The coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost gave the disciples the power and strength to go out and live like Jesus and tell others about Jesus: the Spirit called them into action. It is this same Spirit, whom we received at Baptism, who now calls us into action.
A message from the Parish
Children of our Parish have begun formal preparation for the celebration of the sacrament. Please keep the children and their parents in your prayers as they prepare ‘at home’ for this program. The Parish Sacramental Team will review options and advise when the sacrament is to take place.
Stole
Parents will have received an iron on Confirmation transfer for their child. The photograph below is an indication of a suggested placement of the next three Sacraments - Confirmation, Eucharist and Reconciliation. Wear the stole with the Baptism and Diocese transfers on the right side.
It is wonderful to see the amazing Art Work for the Art Fundraiser that children have been working on at home.
Over the past few weeks Art Teachers have been working with Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 children at school on this project.
Years 3 - 6 are asked to bring their completed artwork into school this week.
Orders are now open via CDFPay and close at 3pm on Friday 31 July, 2020.
The Information letter and template are linked below.
A reminder that all students must have their own Art Smock for use at school. This can be a purpose made Art Smock or an old oversize long sleeve shirt.
The shared art smock supply that children have previously used is no longer available.
NCCD is the National Collection of data for Children with Disability. This body collects information from St Joseph's about the levels of disability funding that a child may be eligible to access in a school environment.
