Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students and the wider St. Joseph’s Primary School Community,
A Father's Day Prayer of Hope
Loving God, We thank you for the gift of Dads in our lives. We pray to you, our loving Father.
We pray for your blessing, over every father figure in the St Joseph’s community.
Especially for those who are seeking to walk closely with you in darkness and for those who just need to be reminded that your love is real.
We ask for your renewed courage, for your boldness, for your Spirit to fill them.
May our fathers always be aware of your presence in their lives.
May they see your love and blessing through the lives of their children.
We ask that they be the model of the “Loving Father” for their children.
We ask that their actions be guided by faith, hope and love.
And that their hearts be filled with love, compassion, joy and great peace.
May we be inspired by the patient love of St Joseph.
Amen

Last week, our Year 4 and Year 6 basketball teams competed in the district tournament at Emmanuel College with impressive results.
On Monday, the Year 4 teams had a stellar performance, winning all their matches and finishing at the top of their ladder.
On Friday, our Year 6 teams took to the court with three squads: boys, girls, and mixed. Both the boys and girls teams demonstrated their skill and determination, securing spots in the next basketball event of the year.
Although our mixed team put up a valiant effort against tough competition, they narrowly missed out on the top position.
Congratulations to all our players for their hard work and dedication!
Year 4 Basketball Teams
Last Friday, 26-year-old students from St Joseph's actively participated in the Interschool Basketball Competition at Emmanuel College.
St Joseph's was represented by three teams: one of the girls, one of the boys and a mixed team. The day began with the mixed team playing first, followed by the girls' and boys' teams. This cycle of games repeated throughout the day, which was great because there was always a game to watch while we rested and knew when our next game would begin. The opposing schools were OLHC, Jamo, East and St Pius, and each team played four games against them.
The mixed team's performance was strong, winning three games convincingly and only being outscored by a point against OLHC. They had a great day, felt proud, and loved sharing their experience with friends.
The boy's and girls' teams dominated the competition, winning all four games convincingly. Their exceptional performance secured their spot in the next round, which will be held in Colac.
As the day ended, tired students returned to St Joseph's, proud of their efforts and achievements.

Squishface Studios Workshop with Year 4 students.
On Tuesday 20th August, Sarah, Rachel and David from Squishface Studios visited our Year 4 students in the library and held a workshop. We did lots of activities such as a Bad Self Portrait, we learnt how to draw emotions and the dice game that helped us learn how to start a story.
The Bad Self Portrait was when you had to draw yourself on a piece of paper but with your eyes closed. It was really fun and also challenging. The next activity we did was drawing different emotions. We drew a happy face, a sad face, a scared face, a surprised face and a disgusted face, all with different methods of adding great detail. There was also the dice game. So we had to roll a dice and there were different sections and things you could roll like if you rolled a 1- your character might get crab claws.
All around it was a fun, incredible and exciting experience and we hope they come back next year.

Save The Date!
Our annual Book Week Costume Parade will be held in Week 8 on Friday 6th September, 2024!
Our annual Book Week Costume Parade will be in Week 8 Friday September 6th. This is a bit later than the official date which offers you the chance to borrow costumes from friends and relatives who may have already had their Book Week at other schools. There is no expectation to spend any money on costumes, as I also have many options for students to borrow from the Library for the day too. This year’s theme is ‘Reading is Magic!’
Please email me if you have any questions or if your child needs some costume items.

They will also run a parent and student night at 6pm on Tuesday 3rd September.

Hats are available at Lowes, Gateway Plaza.
As per our Sun Protection policy:
Please ensure your child has adequate sun protection during the months of September to May. You child will require the following:
- their own sunscreen SPF 30+ or higher,
- St Joseph's Primary School sun hat,
- rash vest (if they are going swimming).
The above items are all to be labelled with their name and room number please.
Classrooms all have a supply of sunscreen available.
Please be advised that we have had a case of Whooping Cough with in our school community.
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a serious, contagious, respiratory infection caused by the bacterium. The disease begins like a cold and then the characteristic cough develops. This cough may last up to 3 months, even after antibiotic treatment is completed and the person is no longer infectious.
The 'whoop' (which is not always obvious) is due to a deep breath at the end of a bout of coughing. Vomiting after coughing is common.
Whooping cough is particularly dangerous for babies less than 6 months of age. These infants are too young to be fully immunised. They are affected more seriously by the disease than older children or adults, and are more likely to develop complications. Older children and adults who have not received whooping cough vaccination are at risk of infection and are often the source of infection in young infants.
Immunisation is the best way to reduce the risk of whooping cough.
Symptoms of whooping cough
Whooping cough begins with symptoms similar to those of a cold. These can rapidly progress to include:
- severe cough – occurs in bouts
- characteristic 'whooping' sound on inhalation
- vomiting at the end of a bout of coughing
- apnoea – the child stops breathing for periods of time and may go blue.
A person with these symptoms may also have poor appetite, fatigue and dehydration. The person may appear normal between bouts of coughing. During the recovery, the cough gradually decreases, but can last up to 3 months.
If your child is showing any of the above symptoms please seek medical advise and keep them at home until they are well.
