PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Michael Gray, Principal
Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff and our wider School Community
As we start a new school year, and a new decade, I recognise that it has been an extremely difficult holiday period for many of our school communities, particularly those in a bushfire or drought-affected area.
Many families from our communities have experienced the loss of loved ones, homes or livelihoods, and are facing extreme financial pressure as the bushfires and drought continue to take their toll. While some communities are now beginning the process of recovery, there are still fires and drought threatening many other communities. This is a time of tremendous hardship, grief and suffering. Our prayers and thoughts are with all during these difficult times. In this part of the world the summer break was much calmer. I trust all enjoyed time with family and friends and are now ready for an exciting year ahead. Classes started on Friday with enthusiasm, a deal of considered caution but all with a sharp focus on purpose, endeavour and what contribution we can all make to our learning. From a friendship perspective, this Wednesday will be a wonderful opportunity for all families to connect with our classroom community; classmates and friends can join us in a relaxed environment. (See the Parent School Association PSA flyer in this newsletter). Essentially all are invited to bring your tea, some chairs or a rug from 5pm. The school grounds will be opened for the event including parking on the Allen Oval which will be accessible from the school carpark. Celebrating 200 years of Catholic educationIn October this year, we will celebrate 200 years since the opening of the very first Catholic school by lay teacher, George Morley, in Parramatta, New South Wales. The celebrations provide an opportunity to recognise the wonderful contribution of Catholic Education to Australian society across the diverse settings of the different dioceses of Australia.
While preparations are underway, the official launch of the celebrations will be at our National Catholic Education Conference in September, and will continue until October 2021.
During the course of the year, the organising committee will be providing a range of resources and materials to support local and diocesan celebrations, and there will be a number of national events to mark this significant milestone.
Looking forward to the year ahead
I take this opportunity to welcome new staff, students and families to our St. Joseph’s Catholic educational community and welcome back those who are already members of our school. With our school team I look forward to serving and supporting you in the year ahead.
