Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students and the wider St. Joseph’s Primary School Community,
God of love, creation and wisdom,
Thank you for our Catholic school, St Joseph's.
We are grateful for our space.
Our space to think, ...
our space to be ...
and our space for silence.
An Excerpt from the St Joseph’s School Prayer
Welcome back for Term 4
Congratulations to all of the Pies supporters. Too good on the day and the best team all season.
There is a lot to learn from the way they go about it and the way they embrace their opportunities, live in the moment and enjoy the challenges.
As I look at Term 4 I can see a wonderful term ahead filled with our own opportunities and challenges. I am inspired by both of the coaches and the teams to embrace each moment.
Transition and Class Groupings for 2024
Further into this newsletter is detailed information about our processes for grouping children into classes for 2024. I would like to draw to two important elements of the process:
- The green forms for parent input, closing on Friday 13th October.
- Children nominate four “Working Buddies” of which they will be placed with at least one.
School Closure Day
Our staff are undertaking professional development next Monday 9th October. There is no school for the children on this day.
Our junior teachers will be exploring the Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) program. LLLL research stresses the importance of explicit and sequential literacy teaching from the beginning of a child’s schooling to give every child the best possible chance of developing into fluent readers, writers and spellers. Little Learners Love Literacy® is a systematic and engaging program with focused explicit lessons, games, crafts, music, puppets, drawing and much more. This program is an extension of the phonics and phonemic awareness practises that our junior teachers are implementing.
Our middle and senior school staff will be engaged in an exploration of the updated mathematics curriculum. There are several changes that need to be implemented for next year which will include some adjustments to our scope and sequence as well as our ongoing assessment tasks. During this time the staff will also explore learning experiences to best support the children in understanding the concepts. This day will be led by Teresa Hadden (DOBCEL) and Joel Saywell our maths leader.
Regards
Matthew O'Brien, Principal

Provisional Psychologist Pilot
A new pilot with Federation University, supported by the Victorian Government
Providing a direct, free of charge, link to a provisional psychologist, without needing to see your GP for a mental health care plan.
Provisional psychologists are students in their 5th and 6th years of study, who are gaining their final experience before registration. All provisional psychologists complete regular sessions with board approved supervisors.
This service is for children, adolescents and adults who are noticing signs that they may not be functioning at their best, as a method of early intervention. If you have a diagnosed mental illness please speak to your GP about what would be the best service for you.
This pilot is for people in rural and regional Victoria only.

Wear Orange on Friday
Our Woof day was a great success with a sea of Orange worn by our students and staff. We raised $622 which is a fantastic effort and much appreciated. Thank you.
Please see the Story Dogs website at www.storydogs.org.au for more information and read about the success of the program.
Sharing of food items in the classroom
As our school community grows we have more students enrolled who have been diagnosed as having food allergies or intolerances. To support all needs we have procedures for the sharing of food items in the classroom. At times some classrooms will have a shared morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea. This is a supervised event and all families are advised of this via a letter sent from the classroom teacher.
This ensures all children's individual needs are met and catered for.
To ensure the inclusion of all students please adhere to the routine for the sharing of food items within the classroom.
Celebration of Birthdays
At St Joseph's we celebrate children's birthdays as a school by presenting the child with a Birthday Certificate at our whole school assembly. Each classroom celebrates birthdays in different ways. Some classes have a special chair for the day or a badge to wear, most classrooms have birthdays displayed in the room.
For the purpose of an individual child’s celebration or birthday we are now advising an lemonade icy pole or Zooper Dooper be a recommended option for these occasions. It is not compulsory to celebrate all birthdays through the classroom.
Icy poles can be dropped into the school office. Please label with child's name and room number and let the classroom teacher know. Average classroom numbers are Foundation (22), Year 1 (23), Year 2 (22), Year 3 (24), Year 4 (27), Year 5 (26) and Year 6 (26).
A reminder that we require all families to login to PAM and update their child's Medical Information if their child's medical details have changed.
This information assists with our electronic permission forms.
Please follow the instructions below to update a medical profile for each of your children by:
- Click on link to PAM (found on our webpage or SZapp)
- Click on student (if more than 1 child, this will need to be done individually)
- Click on Medical Profile (blue writing to the left of screen)
- Check all questions and select Edit Details for updates to be made.
- Once you get to the end of the questions please confirm by clicking on the Green “Update Details” Box found at the bottom right of screen.
As a parent/guardian you are able to access your child/rens medical profile on PAM at any time to update as needed.
If you have any queries or require your PAM login details, please do not hesitate to get in contact with the office.
Please notify the school by phone or by using the Update Contact Details in our SZApp if you have any updates to home address, contact phone numbers and email addresses. Parents are encouraged to have two alternate contacts for their child in the event that parents cannot be contacted.
Be aware that email addresses are used in several of our systems which we need to change each of these manually.
