Matthew O'Brien, Principal
Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students and the wider St. Joseph’s Primary School Community,
God of unity,
We pray that we may recognise our part in the Body of Christ.
May we be Jesus’ hands in action,
his voice in speaking,
and his ears in listening.
Amen.
I was a particularly proud Principal last week as I was able to share in some outstanding efforts by our children.
Firstly, Three of our Year 6 Mini Vinnies leaders went with Di Brown to serve the community through meals on wheels. Coincidently this week was the Feast of the Body of Christ where Catholics reflect on how we can act as members of “the body of Christ” in our community. This team has found a practical way to not only physically feed people but to offer companionship as well. I am grateful to this team for their courage and good will and to Di for her leadership of our Mini Vinnies group. All of the Mini Vinnies leaders will participate in Meals on Wheels this year.
Secondly, I watched the Girls as Leaders of STEM (GALS) deliver their presentation at the Lighthouse Theatre on Friday evening. The team were articulate, intelligent and passionate in their presentation which focussed on Russells Creek. The team have developed a poster outlining their journey which is on display (along with the other schools) at the Warrnambool Library. Emily Lloyd led this team with her usual unbridled passion and enthusiasm. This team will repeat their presentation at our first assembly next term.
Finally, it was a pleasure to be involved with the girls and boy’s footy teams as we headed off to Ballarat for the regional finals on Friday. The way both teams went about their games and supporting each other was a real credit to them, their families and the school. Congratulations to the boys who have made it through to the state final next term and to the girls who played with such joy and enthusiasm.
Good luck to all of our children who are a part of the Primary Performers production of Annie. Break a leg!
As we head off for a well earned rest I would like to congratulate all of the children for their efforts this term and thank our staff for their endeavours and I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday.
Important Meeting:
Staying Safe Online/Cyber Safety
Parent and Child Night, 7pm Tuesday 19th July
The Warrnambool police are working with our Year 4, 5 and 6 students on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th of July regarding Cyber safety. A part of this program is a parent and child session on the Tuesday evening. I cannot stress enough how important it is that children and parents hear and discuss the same information with their children. To that end I urge all families to attend this important evening.
Wet Day Pick Ups
The office is often inundated with calls to change pick up arrangements on wet days. If it is raining heavily we hold the children under cover until it eases before walking them to Queens Road or the tennis courts. In a light drizzle we walk them across.
If you wish to change arrangements please call the office well before 3:15pm as a message is delivered over the loudspeaker at 3:15pm listing all of the children whose arrangements have changed. Calls after 3:15pm will not get through to children as office staff and classrooms are unpredictable at these times.
We understand that at times changes are unavoidable but ask you to keep to your usual routine where possible.
Regards
Matthew O'Brien, Principal
Happy Birthday to children celebrating their birthday this week.
Elijah Bishop, Oliver Ault, Jacky Deverall, Billy Nicolson, Esmae Coleman, Remy Roberts, Zarah Timpson, Milla Delaney, Ryland Hunter, Jonny Hunt and Dylan Thomas.
Regional Girls and Boys Football
Our Girls and Boys football teams travelled via bus to Alfredton Recreation Reserve in Ballarat to compete at the Regional championships on Friday 17th June.
The girls played a total of 3 matches, winning 3 and narrowly going down in 1. This saw them finish very close to the top of the ladder, well done girls.
The boys played a total of 4 matches, winning all 4 and therefore finishing on top, meaning they will progress to the State Finals on Wednesday 17th August, well done boys.
The day was a huge success for all. Mr. O’Brien, Kayne, Layla and myself were all very impressed at the level of humility and maturity our students played with, along with some excellent displays of football ability. Well done to both of our teams.
Hockey Trials and Event
This Wednesday 22nd June we will hold our second lot of hockey trials at lunch time. If you were away last week and would like to come along please do. Teams will be picked and announced by the end of the week. The Division hockey will be held on Friday 15th July.
State Cross Country
State Cross Country is coming up in week one of term 3 on Thursday 14th July. The event will be held at the Yarra Valley Racing Club in Yarra Glen.
A huge congratulations to the following students who have qualified for the event, and will represent the school at State level.
- Lottie Wilkinson
- Gano Akoch
- Ethan Alexander
- Molly McNeil

Parent Visits to Year 2 classes
During Week 7 the Year 2 Parents/Guardians were invited into the classrooms to work with their children. The sessions were filled with smiling faces and lots of chatter as they worked on various activities.
Thank you to the Parents/Guardians who were able to make it.
Keep an eye out for our next session in Term 3.
Edward the Emu
In Term 3 on Tuesday 26th July, the Year 2 students will be going to the Lighthouse Theatre to watch a performance based on the book ‘Edward the Emu’.
On Tuesday 14th June the Year 2 students were involved in workshops, by the theatre company who will be performing, so that the children can fully be involved and understand the performance next term.
The Public Launch!
On Friday 17th June we went to the Lighthouse Theatre to present our final project to the Lord Mayor, the City Council, Deakin University delegates, School Teachers, our friends and family.
Our final poster, designed to educate the public, was collected from school and is now on display in the Warrnambool City Library. Throughout the holidays our poster is going to be public at the library so you can go look at the posters if you please.
We were very nervous before public speaking, and after some complications with our slideshow we presented our project.
Overall this program has taught us persistence, teamwork and dedication to a group project. We truly believe that we can achieve anything in Science, Engineering, Technology or Mathematics in the future!
Thank you for reading,
Sincerely, the Creek Critters, Year 6 students

Children may also bring non-perishable food items.
Donations can be sent to the school with your child and/or placed in the collections tubs at school.
As Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we are asked to support those in need in our community.
This is done with donations of blankets, non perishable food, toiletries and good quaility children's clothing.

Students are welcome to wear their pyjamas, Oodie or onesie (no sleeveless tops please). Slippers are suitable in the classroom but suitable shoes/runners are required in the playground. It is suggested that children bring a warm jumper or coat for recess and lunch play.
