Jim Guinan, Interim Principal
Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, Students and the wider St. Joseph’s Primary School Community,
This edition of the newsletter will be the last one that I have direct input to, as Matthew O’Brien, our new Principal commences duties for Week 6 on Monday 24th May. This first half of the term has gone quickly and relatively smooth sailing, so I thank you for your input either directly or indirectly.
I would like to draw your attention to an initiative being introduced to St Joseph’s by our Grade 6 students and in particular our school leaders in sustainability Eva Scarborough and Ella Hall, and guided by Mr Andy McCombe. Your children will have more to say to you about how their lunches will be packed. I hope you support them as they follow this initiative and help reduce the amount of non-compostable rubbish left at school.
We are about to start our campaign for 2022 enrolments. You will see advertising for the program in the school and in the community, radio and newspaper. If you know anybody with a child, eligible to start school in 2022, could you please alert them to the fact or direct them to the St Joseph’s website.
Jim Guinan, Interim Principal.
Happy Birthday to children celebrating their birthday this week.
Braxton Harrington, Isla Watson, Zack Smith, Ava Beveridge, Callum Eggins, Archie McGrath, Paddy Sell, Spencer Kenna, Ivy Sobey, James Wearne and Francesca Di Cesare.
Thank you for your patience with the school photos this year. There has been quite a time delay since the original photos were taken until you have received them, and for this I do apologise.
Now that you have received them, if you have any issues for feedback that you would like me to be aware of please email me on cduyn@sjwarrnambool.catholic.edu.au and we will take this into consideration when looking forward at the school photo program.
While I have received messages from families that have loved their photos this year, I have also heard from some families that are not completely happy with them. In a school of 605 students and over 420 families the school photo program is an immense task.
We realise that while as a school we have the photos taken purely for administration, database and historical purposes, they are valued by the families that do purchase them.
Cathy Duynhoven, Business Manager
If you did not receive any photos that you had ordered and paid for, you will need to contact Glen Watson directly for that.
District Cross Country 2021
A big thank you to the students who are participating in the District Cross Country today. We are hoping for great weather and great parent support of our 36 students. Special thanks to George El-Hage for preparing our students last week. Many of our runners hopefully advance to the next stage of Division Cross Country competition to be held on Monday 24th May at Deakin University. Notes will go out later this week for this event.
District Golf 2021
On Friday 14th May, 25 enthusiastic golfers headed out to the Warrnambool Golf Club to play 9 holes of golf, against children from other schools around Warrnambool. We battled on through the wind, rain and occasional sunshine. All of the children did a fantastic job, there were some amazing drives, putts and chips. The children were so excited about how much their game improved as the holes progressed.
Congratulations to Zeta Kane on coming 2nd and Sarita Mueglitz on coming 3rd in the girl’s competition. In the boy’s competition, Archie Heffernan came 2nd, Toby Hellessey 3rd, Harry McDonald 4th, Lachlan Walters 5th and Hamish James 7th. The top girl and the top 7 boys have made it through to the next stage in November. Congratulations to everyone who played and a huge thank you to all the wonderful parents who helped out with each group on the day.
Good luck in November Archie, Toby, Harry, Lachlan and Hamish.
Mrs Joel Saywell

2021 Year 5/6 Football Umpires
For the past 3 weeks Mr McMillan has been training some enthusiastic Year 6 students as Football Umpires. The aim of this program was to give students the opportunity to be leaders in the yard and also to prevent any unnecessary confusion between our budding AFL football players during playtimes. This Friday 21st May will be the final training session for these students, so their attendance is vital so they can complete the final challenge of umpiring an actual game. A roster will be created and implemented from Week 6. Thanks Mr McMillan for giving up your time to get this program up and running!
Regards,
Mrs Emily Lloyd (Physical Education & Sport Co-ordinator)
Mr Matthew McMillan.
Congratulations to the 46 children who received the Sacament of First Eucharist on Sunday at each of the 3 Mass times. This group completed the program during Remote Learning last year with the support of their families.
A reminder that this Sunday 23rd May, 2021 is the Commitment of Parents at any one of the three masses. Children should collect a red stole from the gathering space and sit with their parents.
